What’s in a name?

We feel names are extremely important and so we made sure that the name of our church was more than ‘just’ a name.  We didn’t want a name that described a denomination or a location.  We wanted it to encompass the essence of our church.  That is a pretty tall order but we feel the name we chose, The CrossCurrent, does just that.

In John 17, Jesus prays a pretty dangerous prayer.  In this prayer he sends his disciples into the world just as he was sent by God the Father.  He admits that the world is a pretty dangerous place and yet he still sends them!

The same is true of the church today.  We are sent by Jesus into the world, and as we phrase it, to reconnect it to Jesus.  He doesn’t abandon us but has sent the Holy Spirit to be our guide in all things.  We don’t want our church to be a Christian ghetto where all we do is gather on Sundays and hang until the next week.  We want to live our faith out every minute of everyday.  Sundays are a vital part of what we do as we reconnect with each other, Jesus and the mission that he has sent us on.  It reminds us about why we do what we do and out of a response to what Jesus has done for us, we collectively submit our lives to him.  However, it doesn’t stop on Sunday!  Our Sunday gatherings are a safe and comfortable place.  But that’s not all we’ve been called to.

The CrossCurrent isn’t experienced until we go.  This is where we engage our individual sections of the world.  It’s where our faith collides with real everyday life.  We don’t leave it at the Sunday Gathering but rather bring it with us wherever we find ourselves.

We encourage those who are a part of The CrossCurrent to engage in the lives of their unsaved friends, neighbors, co-workers and family because if we don’t, who will?  Yes it’s crazy and it can be sketchy at times.  But living on the riverbank could be one of the most boring ways to live our lives.  Jumping into the middle of who God has called us to be is how life is meant to be lived.
